      Abstract

      Palembang a capital city of South Sumatera,is one of big cities in Indonesia. Area of Palembang is about 400,61 km2. According to Central Statistical Beareau year 2001,Population of Palembang is about 1,471,443, and is predicted to be 1.861,800 people in 2009. Total length of Palembang read is 780.795 km, with 92 % in good condition, 2,2 % fair condition and 5,7% in bad condition. Nowadays,Public transport service in Palembang is bus,minibus (oplet). In year 2001, number of oplet operate in Palembang is increased 21,54% (2,224 vehicles in 2000 became 2,703 vehicles in 2001), while bus trippled 379% from 398 bus to 2,255 bus in 2001. In order to improve environmental quality some measures should be taken into account such as increase air quality and reduce emissions, reduce traffic noise and impact,improve safety and reduce accidents,reduce transport energy consumption,and reduce CO2 emissions. Based on the state policy to trigger South Sumatera as a National Energy Main Supplier, in the near future South Sumatera will have surplus electricity. Judging on the potential surplus electricity and the above measures to improve environmental quality it is inevitable to have electrical train in urban Palembang
