    Abstract

    A goal of descriptive study is to find out prior knowledge of elementary school students in term of photosynthesis concepts. Study has involved at 42 fifth grade students at a public elementary school in Bandung. Ghatering data used a written test in essay form that consisted of 21 items. The items were categorized in three parts suchs as (1) processing of food producer at green plant, (2) effect light at green plant, and (3) food storage as photosynthesis product. Data were processed descriptively in percentage. Research finding were: (1) 26% students recognized substance that needed in photosynthesis, (2) 69% students had known photosynthesis taking place at leafs, (3) 14% students had known carbon dioxide coming into leafs by stomata, (4) more than 40% students had known photosynthesis process needing sunlight, and (5) 50% students had known plant organs that used as food storage. The study concluded that fifth grade elementary school students had known photosynthesis as prior knowledge although subject matters of photosynthesis have not given at previous grade yet. Thereby, teacher should know prior knowledge of students, so science teaching could be meaningful.
