    Abstract

    This inquiry is aimed at analyzing the appreciation result of English study program students at JPBS FKIP Sriwijaya University Palembang. It is the reader response and visual symbol based learning model to describe the students’ language ability. Cognitive and affective aspects were developed by applying reader response strategy (RRS). Connecting, engaging, and judging are the indicators to be cognitively responded, while the other four ones (describing, conceiving, interpreting, and explaining were affectively responded. To develop students’ psychomotor aspects, visual symbol response was applied. By utilizing research and development (R&D) method, this investigation selected students from three universities in Palembang as the research subject. The preliminary study has been conducted in Sriwijaya University as the place to establish the desain of literature learning model. Data entailed to reply the questions posed in this study were obtained by using test, questionnaire, and the learning model itself. The findings of the study indicated that writing ability of the students in experiment class significantly increased from the baseline 57.50 in pre test to be 73.98 in post test and their speaking ability increased from the score 3.4 to be 74.4 after treatment. Meanwhile, from the result of their appreciation, it can be inferred that cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects qualitatively developed from unclear and unappropriate to be vivid, precise, and rational.
